. . . you were writing a scene but had to leave to do something in town (appointment, whatever), and while you're out, your mind comes up with THE PERFECT bit of dialogue or description or whatever to complete the scene.  So you're out and about and think over the idea for a little bit, figuring that you'll just be able to go and write it when you get home, but when you get there, you can't remember exactly what it was - what was that word?  Did Spike say this or that?

This happened to me today.  I was floating down a river in an inflatable boat and thought of a great bit of dialogue for one of the fics I'm writing, and now I just can't get it to sound/feel like what I came up with.

... unfortunately, the hospital I work in doesn't agree.  My first day back after holidays happened to coincide with the first day of this particular heat wave.  I'm not sure of exact numbers but it was HOT, and because we're a coastal city, also HUMID.  I worked on the surgical floor today where not only is there no such thing as air conditioning, but there aren't enough fans to even remotely cool the hot air they're merely circulating a bit, never mind one per patient.  It was crazy insane OMG shoot-me-now busy and so we're all running around and pretty much melting in our scrubs.  My floor-length pants became rolled-up capris by lunch time.

It's too hot to work and it's certainly too hot to heal.  Our head honcho guy spent ten seconds up there yesterday and said, "it's not that hot."

Right.  Tell that to the patients melting in their beds or the staff who'd be nursing naked if it was hygienic enough to do so.  Explain why we don't rate A/C to each and every visitor today who asked me if it's always this hot and was the air conditioning broken and stared at me in disbelief when I told them that we don't have any.

And the real kicker?

The ice machine was broken, too.  Tepid water for everyone!

*headdesk*

I re-watched Tough Love this morning to remind myself of the story line so that I didn't mess anything up while writing the sequel to Whispers, and I realized that I had already messed things up *grumble*.  Here I was thinking that Buffy's meeting with Dawn's principal about Dawn's absenteeism had already happened before Intervention, but apparently, nope, so oopsie?  Fortunately it was an easy fix - changed three or four sentences in the first paragraph of chapter four.  Author's note left to indicate why, but, grrr, I hate that I did that.

I'm headed to work in a few minutes.  I haven't been there in over two weeks, and I'm walking in to a bunch of changes that nobody explained to any of the staff.  I'll be dealing with new med records, new charting forms, and (just because I'm feeling extra pessimistic) I will probably end up with the worst team and the most uncooperative teammate.

That's it.  Just a morning grump.
